What NATE Certification Is
North American Technician Excellence (NATE) is a non-profit certification body for heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration technicians. NATE certification is voluntary. It is not a government licence, and it does not replace EPA 608 certification, which federal law requires to buy and handle regulated refrigerants. Many employers and manufacturers still value NATE because it tests real-world knowledge.
How the Traditional Pathway Works
According to NATE's traditional pathway page, you pass two exams:
- The Core exam: 50 questions in 1.5 hours, closed book. It covers Basic Electricity (26%), Safety (18%), Temperature and Humidity Measurement (14%), Achieving Desired Conditions (14%), Tools (10%), Basic Science (10%) and Basic Construction (8%).
- A specialty exam: 100 questions in 2.5 hours, in an installation or service area such as Air Conditioning, Air Distribution, Heat Pump or Gas Heating.
NATE also offers the CHP-5 pathway: five 30-question exams for newer technicians. Results are reported as pass or fail, and NATE notes that passing scores may vary slightly between forms.
