Arizona Registrar of Contractors
Arizona Statutes and Rules Exam Guide
What the Arizona contractor law exam is, how it is given, and the statutes worth knowing before you sit it.
Arizona contractor licences are issued by the Arizona Registrar of Contractors (ROC). The licence's Qualifying Party must pass the required exams, and the Statutes and Rules Exam (SRE) tests Arizona contractor law.
Exam Format
- The SRE is part of the AZ Statutes and Rules Training Course and Exam. It is computer-based and open book.
- It is offered online only through GMetrix, and the fee is $61.
- The Qualifying Party must score at least 70%.
- Trade exams are given separately by PSI.
- The ROC does not publish the number of questions, so our mock uses 50 as a practice length.
Statutes Worth Knowing
- The minor-work (handyman) exemption covers casual or minor jobs under $1,000. It does not apply if the work needs a local building permit or is split into smaller contracts to evade the law (A.R.S. §32-1121).
- The Residential Contractors Recovery Fund pays at most $30,000 per individual award and $200,000 per residential licence (A.R.S. §32-1132.01, §32-1139).
- Owner contracts over $1,000 must be in writing and must include the licence number and the registrar's complaint information (A.R.S. §32-1158).
- Complaints must be filed within two years of completion, or of close of escrow or occupancy for new homes (A.R.S. §32-1162).
- Unlicensed contracting is a class 1 misdemeanor, with a fine of at least $1,000 for a first offense (A.R.S. §32-1164).
