What the CPO Pool Operator Mock Exam Covers

Each attempt draws 50 questions at random from a pool of 184. The pool covers these topics. Your score report breaks your result down the same way, so you can see which areas need more study.

TopicQuestions in PoolShare
Disinfection and Sanitizers5530%
Water Testing and Balance3016%
Circulation, Filtration and Chemistry3720%
Contamination Response2413%

About 81% of the pool is recall and core-concept questions. The other 19% are harder applied questions, such as scenarios, calculations or details that are easy to confuse.

Editor's Note on the CPO Pool Operator Exam

Learn the two fecal numbers cold. Formed stool or vomit means 2.0 ppm for 25 minutes, doubled with CYA. Diarrhea means 20 ppm for 12.75 hours with no CYA. Remember the setup steps too: pH 7.5 or lower, water 77°F or warmer, non-stabilized chlorine only. Source: MAHC 6.5.2–6.5.3 (CDC).

CPO Pool Operator Mock Exam Pacing Plan

You have 90 minutes for 50 questions, which is about 1.8 minutes per question. Use these checkpoints to stay on pace:

CheckpointBe at or past questionElapsed time
First quarter1323 min
Halfway2545 min
Three quarters3868 min

If you are behind, flag any question that is taking too long and move on. Leave a few minutes at the end to go back to your flagged questions. Unanswered questions count as wrong, so give an answer to every question before time runs out.

What Score Do You Need?

To pass, you need 38 of 50 correct (75%), so you can miss up to 12 questions. The official pass mark is not published in a form we can verify, so treat this as a practice target. We suggest scoring 10 points above the pass mark on two attempts in a row before you book the real exam, because the pool here is smaller than the official bank.

How to Use Your Score Report

  1. Sort by topic. Start your next study session with any topic where you scored below 75%.
  2. Read the source. Each answer cites a section or quotes its source text. Read the surrounding passage, not just the answer line.
  3. Drill, then retest. Use the adaptive practice test on your weak topics. It gives you more of the kinds of questions you miss. Then take this mock again for a new random set.
  4. Return to the guide. The CPO Pool Operator guide covers exam fees, scheduling, retake rules and what to bring on test day.
